Clitocybe albirhiza Bigelow & Smith Cap 3-10cm across, obtusely convex becoming flatter with an inrolled margin, sometimes with a slight umbo, then becoming funnel-shaped with an upturned, wavy, sometimes notched margin; pale buff to watery brown with faint concentric bands or patches of tawny pinkish buff; at first covered with a whitish downy bloom, more or less smooth in age. Gills adnate to decurrent, close, narrow to broad; whitish then buff or same color as cap. Stem 30-80 x 5-20mm, stuffed then hollow, sometimes fluted, base densely covered in white rhizoids; same color as cap; tough, smooth or downy when moist, becoming finely hairy and furrowed when dry. Flesh firm, somewhat thicker at the disc; pale buff. Odor slightly unpleasant. Taste bitter. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, nonamyloid, 4.5-6 x 2.5-3.5µ. Deposit white. Habitat growing in groups or dense clusters under conifers on mountains, between 2000m and 3000m (6500-10,000ft). Found in mountainous areas of western North America. Season June-July. Not edible |
